Free Google rank checker

Find out where you actually rank, not where you think you do. Enter a keyword and a domain, pick a country, and see your position in Google's top 50 organic results, the page Google chose to show, and the ten results you need to beat.

  • No sign-up
  • Live data, shown in full
  • Any domain, including competitors

How to check your Google ranking

  • Type the keyword exactly as a customer would search it.
  • Enter your domain. Subdomains count, so blog.example.com results show for example.com.
  • Pick the country your customers search from, then check.
  • Read the position, the page that ranks, and the top 10 you're up against.

What a Google ranking is

Your ranking is the position of your page among Google's organic results for a search: position 1 is the first ordinary result below any ads. This checker counts organic results only, the same way Search Console does, so answer boxes, videos and ads don't push the number down.

Why your ranking differs from what you see

  • Location: results differ between countries and even cities. Pick the country you sell in.
  • Personalisation: Google shifts results by what you've searched before. This checker searches signed out, with no history.
  • Device: mobile and desktop results can differ. This checker reads desktop results, which are the closest to what most rank trackers report.
  • Time: rankings move daily. A single check is a snapshot, not a trend.

What the position means for traffic

PositionWhat to expect
1 to 3Most of the clicks for that search
4 to 10Some clicks; the page is close and worth improving
11 to 20Page two; very few clicks, but often a short push from page one
21 to 50Google sees the page as relevant, but not yet as one of the best answers
Not in the top 50The page doesn't compete for this search yet, or targets a different one
Roughly what each band of results earns. Real click rates depend on the search and what sits above the results.

Checking keywords at scale

This checker answers one question at a time. To see every search your site already appears for, with clicks and average positions, connect Google Search Console: its Performance report is free and covers all your queries. AutomatedSEO reads it for you and plans content around the searches you're closest to winning.

How to improve a ranking

  • Match the intent: look at the top 10 and write the kind of page Google is already rewarding for that search.
  • Answer fully and first: the opening paragraph should answer the question, then go deeper than the pages above you.
  • Link to the page from your other pages on the topic, with anchor text that says what it's about.
  • Fix technical problems that stop Google reading the page. Run the technical SEO audit.
  • Earn links from sites your audience trusts. The backlink checker shows who links to the pages above you.

Picking searches you can realistically win matters as much as the page itself; see choosing keywords you can win.
