01 · The job

7 stages, from keyword to ranking page

“SEO automation” stretches to fit whatever a vendor built. Before you compare prices, work out which of these stages you would still be doing by hand.

  1. Stage 1

    Research

Does it decide what to write, or do you?

It should find the keywords your site can win. A blank keyword box means you are still doing the research.

  2. Stage 2

    Writing

Does it write the article for you?

Nearly every tool clears this bar. It is the stage most vendors lead with, and the one that saves the least time on its own.

  3. Stage 3

    Publishing

Does it publish to your CMS by itself?

Copying a draft into WordPress or Webflow and fixing the formatting takes 10 to 20 minutes an article.

  4. Stage 4

    Volume

Does it keep going at 30 or more a month?

Search rewards sites that publish steadily. A plan capped at a handful of articles leaves you writing the rest.

  5. Stage 5

    Internal links

Does it link new articles into the rest of your site?

Articles nobody links to are slow to rank. Linking them by hand means rereading your whole blog every time.

  6. Stage 6

    Backlinks

Does it get other sites to link to you?

Links from other sites are still one of the strongest ranking signals, and the hardest part to do yourself.

  7. Stage 7

    Technical fixes

Does it fix the site the articles live on?

Missing titles, broken links and slow pages hold back every article you publish until someone fixes them.

What each tool actually automates

Each row is the vendor's cheapest paid plan, read from their own pricing and product pages on 17 September 2026. “Not stated” is a gap in what they publish, not a claim that the feature is missing.

03 · Ranking

All 12 tools, scored out of 7

1 point for each stage the entry plan includes, half a point where it needs a higher plan, an add-on or comes with a limit, and nothing where the vendor doesn't say. Ties go to the lower price.

  1. #1AutomatedSEO7/7

The only platform here with every capability on its entry plan: it fixes technical SEO as well as publishing, and tracks citations in all four major assistants, at one price per site.

  2. #2BabyLoveGrowth6.5/7

Close to complete, with a 90-day money-back guarantee like ours, but it audits technical issues rather than fixing them, and tracks three assistants to our four, leaving out Perplexity.

  3. #3BlogSEO6/7

The widest set of publishing integrations and a lower dollar price, but AI citation tracking costs an extra $89 a month and each extra language is an add-on.

  4. #4Frase5/7

A strong research-and-optimise loop with AI visibility included, but 10 articles a month on Starter and no link building for you.

  5. #5Search Atlas5/7

The broadest toolkit for hands-on SEO teams, and its OTTO agent applies technical fixes, but AI visibility and white label sit on higher plans and output is metered in credits.

  6. #6Outrank5/7

A proven autopilot writer with a backlink exchange and 150+ languages, but no rank or AI citation tracking listed, and a long add-on menu.

  7. #7AutoSEO5/7

Daily articles, backlinks and 100 languages with a money-back window, but no rank or citation tracking listed and the highest autopilot price here.

  8. #8SEOWriting.ai3.5/7

The cheapest way to generate articles in bulk, but research, links and measurement are left to you.

  9. #9Surfer3.5/7

The best-known content editor for writing to a score, but you still write and publish, and AI tracking starts on a higher plan.

  10. #10SEO.ai3/7

An AI agent with backlinks and Google Ads built in, but the highest entry price here and no stated article volume.

  11. #11Semrush2/7

The deepest keyword and competitor data, and a good partner to any of the others, but it measures the work rather than doing it.

  12. #12Jasper1.5/7

A capable on-brand marketing writer for teams, but not an SEO platform: no research, publishing schedule or ranking data.

04 · How to choose

Price the stages you would still do by hand

A cheap AI writer is the right answer if research, publishing and links aren't your bottleneck. The trap is comparing a $9 writer with a tool that does the whole job as if they did the same work.

Add up the hours you spend each month on keyword research, publishing, linking and fixing your site. If it is under two, buy the cheap writer. If it is closer to ten, a tool that does those stages pays for itself before you count the articles that never got written.

Want to know what each tool measures once the articles are live? Our comparison of AI SEO tools also scores rank tracking, AI citation tracking and white-label reports.
