  • Any domain, including competitors
  • Enter a domain: your own, or a competitor that outranks you.
  • Read the headline numbers: how many sites link, how many links in total, and how many pass authority.
  • Look through the strongest links to see which sites vouch for the domain and what they call it.

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines treat links as recommendations: a page with links from sites people trust is more likely to rank. A backlink checker looks a domain up in a link index, a crawl of the web that records which pages link where, and summarises what it finds.

MetricWhat it meansWhat to look for
Referring domainsHow many different websites link to the domainThe number that matters most. Ten links from ten sites beat a hundred from one
BacklinksEvery individual link, including many from the same siteA count far above referring domains usually means sitewide footer or sidebar links
Dofollow shareThe share of links that pass authorityMost healthy profiles are majority dofollow; a natural profile also has some nofollow
Authority scoreA vendor's 0 to 100 estimate of the domain's link strengthCompare against the sites ranking above you, not against an absolute target
Anchor textThe clickable words of each linkMostly brand names and URLs is natural. Lots of exact-match keywords can look manipulated
The numbers in the report, and what they tell you.

Search the keyword you want in the Google rank checker, then check the backlinks of the sites in the top three. Sites that link to several competitors but not to you are your warmest prospects: they already link to pages like yours.

  • Publish things worth citing: original data, clear definitions, useful tools and genuinely complete guides.
  • Get listed where your customers look: directories, marketplaces and integration pages for tools you work with.
  • Ask partners, suppliers and customers who already know you to link where it helps their readers.
  • Fix broken links: find pages that linked to a URL of yours that now 404s, and redirect it.
  • Avoid paid link schemes and private blog networks. Google discounts them and can penalise the site.
Every link index sees a different slice of the web. Counts from this checker, Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz won't match, and none of them see every link. Use one source consistently to track change over time.
