Free keyword density checker

Is your page clearly about what you want it to rank for, or stuffed with it? Analyse any page or draft to see the words and phrases it repeats most, how often your target keyword appears, and whether it's in the places that matter: title, H1, description and opening paragraph.

How to use it

  • Optionally enter the keyword you want the page to rank for.
  • Enter a page address, or paste a draft into the second tab.
  • Check the target keyword card first, then scan the phrase tables for what the page actually emphasises.

What keyword density is

Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears, as a share of all the words on a page. A phrase used 10 times in 1,000 words has a density of 1%. This checker counts exact phrase matches and divides by the total word count.

Is there an ideal keyword density?

No. Google hasn't used keyword density as a ranking target for many years; it understands synonyms, related terms and topics. Density is a diagnostic: very low can mean the page never clearly says what it's about, and very high usually reads as forced to people and to search engines.

DensityLabelWhat it suggests
Not usedNot usedThe exact phrase never appears; the page may target something else
Under 0.5%LightFine on a long page if the title, H1 and intro carry the phrase
0.5% to 2.5%TypicalWhere most naturally written pages land
Over 2.5%HeavyLikely repetitive; vary the wording
How the checker describes your target keyword's density. Treat these as signals to reread the page, not targets.

What matters more than density

  • Placement: the phrase, or a close variant, in the title, H1 and first paragraph.
  • Coverage: answering the related questions searchers have, which brings in the related terms naturally.
  • Clarity: an opening that answers the search directly, which is also what makes a page citable by AI.
  • The rest of the page: run the technical SEO audit to check titles, headings and indexability.
