How to automate SEO articles without publishing junk
Automation isn't what gets sites penalised. Publishing pages that add nothing is. Here's where to automate and where to keep a human.
Google doesn't penalise content for being written with AI. Its spam policies target scaled content abuse: many pages produced mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help people, however they were made. The line isn't human versus machine. It's whether each page earns its place.
Automate the parts that are genuinely mechanical
- Keyword and prompt research, and checking what currently ranks for each term.
- Grouping topics into clusters and planning a month of articles.
- First drafts built from that research.
- Formatting, title tags, meta descriptions and schema.
- Publishing to your CMS on a schedule.
- Adding internal links and repairing broken ones.
Keep a human on the parts that carry trust
- Approving the plan: does each topic matter to your buyers?
- Adding what only you know: prices, results, opinions, the mistakes customers make.
- Checking any claim with a number in it.
- Putting a real name on the byline, with a profile that shows why they know the subject.
Five signs an automated article is junk
- It repeats the five points every other result already makes, in the same order.
- It could sit on any competitor's site without a word changed.
- Its statistics have no source, or a source that doesn't say that.
- It targets a keyword nobody on your team would recognise as a customer question.
- Its date says it was updated this week, but nothing in it changed.
Start in review mode
For the first month, approve every draft before it publishes. You'll learn what the system gets right, correct the voice, and spot topics that don't fit. Once most drafts need only light edits, switch the routine ones to autopilot and keep reviewing anything commercial.
A useful test before publishing: if this page were the only thing a buyer read about you, would it help them? If not, don't publish it, however cheaply it was made.
